The Organisation for Economic, Co-operation and Development has listed teacher turnover and supply challenges as key difficulties in the Australian education system.

Centre for Independent Studies' Glenn Fahey says “education progressives” are the cause of this issue, calling for teachers to adopt a more “authoritative” and “proactive” approach.

“It’s yet another disappointing report card on Australia’s school systems where increasing disruption and disorder is being reported at the same time that record spending is associated with poorer results, poorer well-being and worse outcomes for Australia’s teachers,” he told Sky News host Peta Credlin.

“Education progressives have got a lot to answer for here.

“They’ve encouraged us to have light touches toward behaviour, to forgive poor behaviour, to rely on teachers to become relationship managers and facilitators with students rather than providing an authoritative source for behaviour, providing proactive classroom management.”
