In 501, supporters of Pope Symmachus created a series of five forgeries to lend falsified precedents to help exonerate him at trial and establish his control of the papacy from a rival, Antipope Laurentius. Not to be outdone, the supporters of Laurentius created their own version of the forgeries with suitable amendments and creative additions that was so influential, it was included in the Book of the Popes a few decades later. One of those forgeries was so useful, it is still part of Catholic canon law.
