Hi guys, this is Mark from anypond.com your trusted resource in the UK for ponds and water features and today I’m a bit fired up.
It’s all about gold fish. Have you got too many gold fish in your garden pond? Or maybe you have, maybe you haven’t?
What do you do with too many gold fish?
Well, you’ve got a responsibility as a pond owner to look after the fish that you’re keeping. So the first thing you do is you don’t kill them or you don’t dump them or fly tip them into a local park or a local lake. That is a big no-no.
What you can do, on the other hand, is advertise that you’ve got free fish on the Internet. These days there’s lots of people, they’ve got small ponds and they’re not worried...and they’re willing to give your gold fish a free home.
Sometime back in 2008 when recession hit in the UK, I had to re-home 1400 koi over an18-month period. That’s just crazy because the amount of people couldn’t afford to upgrade the filters or basically having too many fish for the size of the pond.
So, what to do with too many fish! Well, the first thing to do like I said is to put up an advert somewhere. You might find someone that wants free fish and is willing to gamble putting the fish in with their current occupants.
If you’re receiving free fish on the other hand, you’ve got to be very, very careful, from a bio security point of view. The fish might be perfectly free and disease free and everything else but it could be that the parasites that those fish have got, your fish have not been exposed to those parasites. Or, the parasites on your healthy fish, haven’t been exposed. The new fish haven’t been exposed to the parasites of your own fish.
So, it’s very hard and it’s a gamble all the time. I’m probably going to get bashed by this from some of these, there are hobbyists and there are charities and stuff who take your fish. There are millions of ways to make sure that the fish is disease-free and everything. Just ramping up the temperature and inducing an outbreak if they are diseased.
So there’s a number of different things. But this is a short video. A practical advice coming from me, Mark The Pond Adviser, just to give you practical advice really.
What to do with too many fish? Or, should I take free fish?
