1. Prepare the Supplies:

2. Position the Patient:

3. Instill the Irrigation Solution:
Eye Cup/Bulb Syringe: If using an eye cup, fill it with the irrigation solution. Place the cup around the eye and have the patient blink while the eye is submerged. If using a bulb syringe, gently squeeze the bulb to instill the solution into the eye.
Eye Dropper: If using an eye dropper, hold the eyelids open and gently drop the solution into the eye from above.

4. Flush the Eye:
Continuous Irrigation: Slowly pour the solution over the eye, starting at the inner corner and allowing it to flow to the outer corner. Continue until the foreign substance or debris is flushed out.
Be Gentle: Use a slow, steady flow of solution to avoid causing discomfort.

5. Monitor the Patient:
Observe the patient’s reaction to the irrigation and ensure they are comfortable.
Check for signs of irritation, pain, or visual changes during the procedure.

6. Dry the Eye and Surrounding Area:
Gently pat the area around the eye with a clean towel or tissue to dry it.

7. Reassess the Eye:
Check the eye for any remaining foreign bodies or signs of injury.
If the patient's symptoms persist or worsen, seek medical attention promptly.

8. Provide Follow-Up Care:
Documentation: Record the procedure, including the reason for irrigation, solution used, and patient response.
Patient Education: Provide instructions for any necessary follow-up care, such as avoiding rubbing the eye and watching for signs of infection or injury.

Safety Tips:
Always use sterile saline or clean water to irrigate the eye. Tap water can contain impurities or chemicals that may irritate the eye.
Ensure the irrigation solution is lukewarm to avoid causing discomfort.
If the patient wears contact lenses, have them remove the lenses before beginning the irrigation.
If the patient experiences severe pain, vision changes, or persistent symptoms, seek medical attention immediately.
