Aung San Suu Kyi Debates with Sciences Po Students in France

In February 2012, Nobel Prize winner and political activist Aung San Suu Kyi conducted a video conference with a group of Sciences Po Le Havre students. This conference formed an important part of the Europe-Asia undergraduate programme for students at the Sciences Po Le Havre campus.

The video conference was conducted from Aung San Suu Kyi’s house in Burma. The conference was held during the time when Aung San Suu Kyi was running as an opponent to the Burmese junta government.

Alex Aung Khant is a student at Sciences Po who is related to Aung San Suu Kyi. He helped to arrange the conference, stating that Aung San Suu Kyi was aware of Sciences Po and very happy to take part.

During the video conference, Aung San Suu Kyi stated that France, along with other European countries, has a role to play in reminding the Burmese government about what they expect from the democratisation process. She says that the greatest desire of the Burmese people is to escape from poverty.

The students at Sciences Po were inspired by the conference. They realised the significant links between democratic development and economic development. The students were able to see the need to form connections and alliances to help the economy flourish along with democracy.
