Hirschsprung's disease is a rare birth defect that affects the large intestine (colon). It is caused by the absence of nerve cells in the colon, which prevents the colon from contracting and moving stool through the digestive system. This can lead to constipation, abdominal distension, and vomiting.

Hirschsprung's disease is diagnosed through a combination of physical examination, blood tests, and imaging studies. The only treatment for Hirschsprung's disease is surgery to remove the affected portion of the colon. This surgery is usually performed in the first few weeks of life.

The prognosis for children with Hirschsprung's disease is excellent. With early diagnosis and treatment, most children with Hirschsprung's disease go on to live normal, healthy lives.
