This is my continuous attempt at tutorials to a powerful glitch in SMW called Powerup Incrementation. Please, see these videos (   • SMW ǀ Unintended Powerup State (Power...   and    • SMW ǀ X-Position Indicator (ACE) + Po...   ) for my previous tutorials on the powerup incrementation glitch. This glitch allows Mario to be at Powerup States (PS) not intended normally, which allows for additional glitches. In SMW, Mario can only be either small (PS 0), Big (PS 1), Cape (PS 2) or Fire (PS 3). The game specifies Mario’s Power Status by a value between 0 and 255. The Powerup Incrementation glitch allows you to put Mario at PS between 4 and 255. In this serie of 4 episodes, I want to show the appearance of Mario at all possible Powerup States. Indeed, Mario are some unintended PS can be pretty glitchy lookin’! Also, in this serie, I will show what happens when you increment at PS 255 (Mario returns to PS 0, Small Mario).
Mario’s 256 appearances can be breakdown into 4 cycles of 64 renderings. So Small Mario (PS 0) has the same appearance as Mario at PS 64, 128 and 192. In general, Mario becomes glitchier as his PS gets a high value. For sure, the last cycle (Cycle 4) is very glitchy. Hope this video can help find your way into the awesome world of unintended Powerup States.
Powerup Incrementation procedure: You need a Yoshi and be Fire Mario (PS 3). Go to Yoshi’s Island 3. Basically, for this glitch, Yoshi has to spit a null sprite on the Rotating Platform at a precise X-position, facing right. To have a null sprite in Yoshi’s mouth, you have to perform a block duplication to have two Yoshis. In SMW, only one Yoshi can be seen at a time. With one Yoshi, eat the shell and ditch it. Now, the second Yoshi will spawn with a null sprite in his mouth. Quickly go to the left Platform. Place Yoshi at precise position, facing right. When Yoshi’s mouth is aligned with the background’s mountain top, spit the null sprite. If done correctly, you will increment your Power Status by 1 unit. Start-Select to exit the level and repeat the procedure to go to the desired Power Status. When Mario’s Power Status is higher than 3, you can spawn additional unintended sprites.

My setup: I use an original Japanese Super Mario World cartridge played on a Super Retro Trio 3 Console (PAL version); I thus played in Real-Time Attack [RTA] without Saved States. Video and sound captured using an ‘EasyCAP’ USB adapter (S-signal) and ‘OBS’ software. Video editing done using Shotcut software.
