Your First Softbox | Take and Make Great Photography with Gavin Hoey

Small or tall, square or octagonal, softboxes come in a vast array of sizes and shapes. But whatever size and shape of softbox you use, they all have many things in common and that’s exactly what photographer Gavin Hoey investigates in his beginner's guide to using a softbox.

Gavin starts by dismantling a 3’x2’ rectangular softbox to test how the light is altered by the various diffusing fabrics and the results might surprise you. From the directional, hard light of an empty softbox to the super wide spread and soft shadows of a full set-up softbox, this is one set of results every studio photographer should see.

Then Gavin takes a look at the best height for a softbox and explains why an elevated lighting position is his personal favorite. Finally, the grid is added to the softbox to create a light modifier that has controlled direction and soft shadows. Of course along the way Gavin has some top tips to take some amazing portraits on your first softbox photo session.
