This is one of the most surprising videos I’ve made in a while. If you’ve seen some of the videos on this channel, you know that, though they are generally quite beautiful, Amazfit watches tend to be quite bad at sports and health tracking. However, this 280 dollar Amazfit T-Rex 3 will probably surprise you, as it did me; though as you will see, it is not all good news. In this video we will systematically and scientifically test the T-Rex 3 for its heart rate tracking performance during exercise, compare its sleep stage tracking performance against an EEG device and look at the consistency of the GPS tracking.
I won’t list all the specs of the T-Rex 3, but I do want to put it into the context of its competitors. The T-Rex 3 is not a standard smartwatch, but falls more in the category of outdoor adventure watches. I would say it competes with watches like the Garmin Enduro and Fenix series and the Coros Vertix line. That also means the T-Rex 3 is not a small watch, and it will look quite clunky on your wrist, so that is something you need to like in a watch. However, this large size also means they were able to pack quite a large battery in this watch, leading to a battery life of up to three weeks, and up to 180 hours of continuous outdoor GPS activity. However, this reduces to 42 hours in “GPS Accurate Mode”, which is still pretty good. As we are used to from Amazfit, the 1.5 inch AMOLED display looks really good, it’s crisp and bright, at up to 2000 nits. There is Komoot integration, where you can import routes from the Komoot app. I did not try this yet, but I might go on a hike tomorrow, and if I tested it, you will hear from future Rob now.
You can also sync your Amazfit workouts to Strava, which is good, and you can actually download your workouts directly from the Zepp app in common formats like GPX and TCX, which I was surprised by. So, if you just want to get your data, you don’t even need Strava any more. I do use Strava, and you can follow me below, though it has its issues and DC Rainmaker actually recently made a nice critical video about Strava which I recommend you watch after this one. So, feature-wise the T-Rex 3 is pretty good, and it looks good too. But, can this 300 dollar watch compete with the more expensive equivalent watches of COROS and the much much more expensive watches of Garmin? Let’s take a look. Ow, side-note, you will notice the overviews I will share won’t show the results for the COROS Vertix 2S and the Garmin Enduro 3 and Fenix 8 yet. I am currently testing these, but because of my day-job I am quite limited in the time I can spend on this channel.
