DPA drum day @Splash recording studio with Alfredo Golino-May 17th 2015

Having such a musician like Alfredo golino and being able to record his Saturn IV Mapex is always a privilege. In this DPA Drum Day at Splash Recording Studio we had the chance, thanks to the wise help of Massimo Aluzzi and Salvatore Zocco, of using two different miking techniques, while being able to compare them with a standard multitrack technique, obtained with usual “non DPA” mics. The audio of this clip has been mixed with the conventional multitrack technique - widely adopted in commercial recordings, using exclusively DPA microphones. Drums instruments have been individually miked, with two wide cardiods as overheads and a pair of omni in the back, to pick up the ambient. Another available technique - commonly used for more acoustic recordings, as Jazz music - uses the back pair of omnis as main pair, with the possible help of just a touch of the individual mics placed on the bass drum, on the snare, and on the hi-hat, possibly used, in case it is required by the production needs, to perfect the mix balance.

Avere un musicista del calibro di Alfredo Golino e poter riprendere la sua Mapex Saturn IV è sempre un privilegio. In questo DPA Drum Day allo Splash Recording Studio abbiamo potuto sfruttare, grazie alla sapiente collaborazione di Massimo Aluzzi e Salvatore Zocco, due diverse tecniche di ripresa, in comparazione ad una delle tecniche standard multitraccia realizzata con microfoni usuali, “non DPA.” In questo filmato l’audio è realizzato con la convenzionale tecnica multitraccia esclusivamente con i microfoni DPA, normalmente dedicata a riprese di tipo commerciale, dove i singoli strumenti della batteria sono ripresi individualmente, con l’ausilio di due overhead a cardioide ampio e con la coppia omni posteriore a dare ambientazione. Un altra tecnica possibile, generalmente dedicata a riprese con carattere più acustico, come nel caso di registrazioni Jazz, prevede i due omni posteriori come coppia principale, con l’eventuale ausilio di un leggero tocco dei soli microfoni di cassa, rullante e hi-hat a perfezionare il bilanciamento in mix possibilmente richiesto da eventuali esigenza di produzione.
