The Whaling stations on South Georgia Island are rich with history and heritage. In 1916, Sir Earnest Shackleton reached Stromness Station to find rescue for his shipwrecked crew after his disastrous Antarctic expedition where his ship Endurance sunk in the ice of the Weddell Sea.

The stations have long been abandoned. The buildings are degrading and falling down. Elephant and Fur Seals have reclaimed the beaches and buildings.
The South Georgia Heritage Trust sent a survey team of experts to assess what could be done to preserve some of the historically important buildings and to removes pollutants and hazards from the sites.

Special thanks to The South Georgia Heritage Trust, Government of South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands, Quixote Expeditions and RSK Falklands.
