Scrum and Kanban are both Agile approaches but differ in structure and flexibility. Scrum is more process-driven, using fixed-length sprints (usually 2–4 weeks) where the team commits to completing a set amount of work. It has defined roles like Product Owner, Scrum Master, and Development Team, and relies on ceremonies such as Sprint Planning, Daily Standups, Reviews, and Retrospectives. This structure provides predictability and helps teams deliver in consistent, time-boxed cycles.

Kanban, by contrast, is flow-driven and emphasizes flexibility. It uses a visual board to track work items as they move through stages like “To Do, In Progress, Done.” Work is pulled based on team capacity rather than planned in advance, and WIP (Work in Progress) limits ensure the team doesn’t take on more than they can handle. Unlike Scrum, Kanban does not prescribe roles or ceremonies, making it easier to adapt to existing team structures and better suited for environments where priorities shift frequently.

The main difference lies in how change is handled: Scrum discourages changes during a sprint, while Kanban allows adjustments at any time. Scrum uses metrics like velocity and burndown charts to track sprint progress, while Kanban focuses on cycle time and throughput to measure flow efficiency. In short, Scrum works best for teams that benefit from structure and defined goals, while Kanban is ideal for teams needing flexibility and continuous delivery. Some organizations even blend both, known as Scrumban, to combine structure with adaptability.
