In this Balkan Travel Vlog, we visit Ulcinj, a town on the southern coast of Montenegro. The reason we visited Ulcinj is to see the Spomenik! From Ulcinj, we walked to Valdanos to find an abandoned resort from the Yugoslavia era.



Our goal today was to visit the spomenik complex at Ulcinj, Montenegro. This spomenik commemorates the fallen fighters and civilian victims from the city and surrounding region who perished during the People's Liberation Struggle (WWII).


What is a Spomenik? Spomeniks (the Serbo-Croatian/Slovenian word for 'monument') are memorials built from the 1950s-1990s during Tito's Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, whose primary intent was to honor its people's resistance struggle during the People's Liberation Struggle (1941-1945) (aka WWII) against Axis occupation and oppression.


The Yugoslav military decided to use Valdanos as a resort for its forces. Construction would take over two years before it officially opened on April 26th, 1983. The Montenegrin Independence referendum separated the country from Serbia in May of 2006, removing Valdanos from its most extensive remaining client base.


Valdanos currently sits abandoned like a shrine to seaside life in Yugoslavia.
