Οι Wonderland σχηματίστηκαν την άνοιξη του 1968 στο Αμβούργο από τον Achim Reichel, αφού ολοκλήρωσε την στρατιωτική του θητεία, μετά την αποχώρησή του από το πρώτο του συγκρότημα, τους The Rattles. Την αρχική σύνθεση συμπλήρωναν οι Frank Dostal (φωνητικά, μπάσο, bongos, όργανο), Helmut Franke (κιθάρα, μπάσο, μπάντζο), Dicky Tarrach (τύμπανα) και Leslie Humphries (πιάνο, κλαρινέτο, σαξόφωνο και όργανο).
Είχαν αρκετές επιτυχίες στη Γερμανία και γίνονταν συνεχώς πιο εκκεντρικοί και ευρηματικοί.
Το ντεμπούτο single,"Poochy/Moscow", σε παραγωγή του James Last, σημείωσε επιτυχία, αλλά χάρη στην B πλευρά, το "Moscow", μπήκε στα γερμανικά charts στο νούμερο 20 την 1η Αυγούστου 1968 και ανέβηκε στο νούμερο 15.
Αυτή η επιτυχία τους οδήγησε στο να ανοίξουν τις συναυλίες των Bee Gees στην γερμανική τους περιοδεία. Στα τέλη του 1969, οι Helmut Franke και Les Humphries έφυγαν από το συγκρότημα και αντικαταστάθηκαν από τους Kalle Trapp (κιθάρα, βιολί, φωνητικά) και Claus-Robert Kruse (πλήκτρα, κιθάρα, μπάσο, φυσαρμόνικα, φωνητικά). They had several hits in Germany and became increasingly eccentric and inventive.
The debut single,"Poochy/Moscow", produced by James Last, was a hit, but thanks to the B-side, "Moscow", it entered the German charts at number 20 on 1 August 1968 and climbed to number 15.
This success led to them opening for the Bee Gees on their German tour. In late 1969, Helmut Franke and Les Humphries left the band and were replaced by Kalle Trapp (guitar, violin, vocals) and Claus-Robert Kruse (keyboards, guitar, bass, harmonica, vocals). At Easter 1970, they were invited to perform at the Berlin Sportpalast alongside the Nice (Emerson, Lake & Palmer) and Deep Purple.
In 1971, with the advent of Krautrock and the psychedelic underground, Wonderland reincarnated as the Wonderland Band, recording their experimental prog solo album titled "No. 1", which in turn led to the formation of the band AR & Machines.
