Reflections on the Saying of Allah, the Exalted:
﴿Indeed, Allah loves those who turn to Him in repentance﴾ [Al-Baqarah: 222]

All praise is due to Allah, who loves those who repent and those who purify themselves. May peace and blessings be upon the Prophet sent as mercy to the worlds, our Prophet Muhammad, and upon his family and companions, and those who follow them with excellence until the Day of Judgment. As for what follows:

Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, says:
﴿Indeed, Allah loves those who turn to Him in repentance﴾ [Al-Baqarah: 222].

This great verse provides a path to Allah’s love for His servant, which is the ultimate desire of every believer and the greatest of their aims. Repentance is among the greatest means of success and prosperity. Allah, the Almighty, says in His Wise Book:
﴿And turn to Allah in repentance, all of you, O believers, that you may succeed﴾ [An-Nur: 31].

Here, Allah commands everyone to repent, and He specifically addresses the believers, making repentance a path to success.

Repentance is returning to Allah. It involves feeling remorse for what one has done, abandoning the sin, and resolving not to return to it again. If the sin involved the rights of another person, one must restore those rights—returning stolen property, seeking forgiveness, or making amends for harmful words or actions.

Mistakes are inevitable, shortcomings happen, and sins occur, but the lesson is to strive to avoid them and, if one falls into sin, to hasten to repent. The Prophet, peace be upon him, said:
“All the children of Adam are sinners, but the best of sinners are those who repent” [Reported by Al-Tirmidhi and Ibn Majah].

Indeed, the Prophet, peace be upon him—the noble, honorable Prophet exalted in his words and deeds—used to repent and seek forgiveness from Allah. He said:
“O people! Repent to Allah and seek His forgiveness, for I repent to Him a hundred times each day” [Reported by Muslim].

The Prophet also informed us that Allah, Blessed and Exalted, has opened the door of repentance for His servants out of His grace and generosity. The Prophet, peace be upon him, said:
“Allah stretches out His Hand at night to accept the repentance of those who sinned during the day, and He stretches out His Hand by day to accept the repentance of those who sinned during the night, until the sun rises from its west” [Reported by Muslim].

O Allah, guide us to sincere repentance, accept it from us, forgive our mistakes, our excesses, and our shortcomings, admit us into Paradise by Your mercy, and save us from Your punishment.
