Top 10 Greatest Shmup Developers of All Time! I love shmups and talking about the development and the design of this amazing genre. In today's video I go through and rank who I think are the top 10 greatest shoot em' up developers of all time. One thing that I want to recognize though is that the talent and library of amazing games in this genre is INSANE and that it is simply not possible to actually capture who the 10 best developers of the genre are, especially based on which versions of shmups you value more than others. There are a lot of sub genres within sub genres. However, what I think this list is great for is expressing what I value in the genre's design and why I value it, which I think is a much more important and interesting discussion than trying to be somehow objective. In some genres, the talent pool is pretty limited so it can be pretty easy to formulate and decide on which developer is the most important and influential, but in the world of shmups, these devs are just on another level and really making games with so much artistic intergrity and passion that we simply do not see anymore outside of the arcade era. So on top of discussing why I think certain devs are ahead of their peers, I also want this vid to demonstrate, once again, how VITAL the arcade era was to pioneering and forward thinking game design. As of right now, a lot of the games I discuss can be played on the Nintendo Switch, the Playstation 4/PS5, and of course PC via Steam or sometimes stand alone programs. Alas though, for certain devs on this list cough Psikyo, if you want a decent experience playing their bueatiful games, you are going to need to venture into the world of emulation either with Retorarch/Final Burn Alpha or MAME. Both are honestly solid options these days.
