Jean Smit from Damascene Vineyards was on tour in Europe and paid us a visit at WaL HQ last week. In his luggage he had his new vintage, which has recently gone online at our Shop.

Together with the entire team, we tasted the 2021 range and what came into the glass here completely ecstasized us. These are region-specific growths in a class of their own, with plenty of verve and precision. This vintage, moderately affected by weather patterns, is a special one for Jean. It is also the first to come from his newly built winery, Habibi Farm. His crus are once again more focused and expressive than last year. In return, the 2020s are slowly but surely moving towards their first plateau of ripeness.

In addition to the Pinot Noir "Moya Meaker" from the plots directly from the farm in cool Elgin, he has for the first time a second Chenin Blanc and a third Syrah releaesed. These two premieres come from sites in the Swartland and are, due to Jean's good connections to Adi Badenhorst, from his stock. Because of the small-scale nature of these parcels, he left the management to Jean.

"It's all about respect. And I'm so happy to work with vineyards from good friends and mentors from me." Jean told us. What an impressive story and no less impressive wines.
