This video demonstrates some of the behaviors seen on our pelagic dives! Galapagos and sandbar sharks are two of the common types of sharks seen on our dives and both are schooling species, meaning they live in groups and are more social then nomadic species. Within the school, there is a social hierarchy and dominance is established throughout the water column. The sharks seen higher up in the water column are more dominant than the sharks below them. When establishing dominance, sharks will display different types of agonistic behaviors, which we look for during our dives. Agonistic behaviors are combative behaviors displayed when they are threatened or being protective (Klimley, A. P., et al., 1996). Some of these behaviors include dropping their pectoral fins, to show a threat display or swimming parallel to each other, to size each other up and get a closer look (Kuiter, H. R., 2014). Another agonistic behavior is jaw gaping, the shark will slowly open its jaw and reveal its teeth. Jaw gaping can often be mistaken for yawning or stretching the jaw and resetting the cartilage (as shown in the video). The difference being, a jaw gape is directed at another shark or species and is a behavior to assert its dominance, where stretching can be seen while the shark is swimming alone and is done to reset the cartilage in their jaws, and yawning is a feeding technique when the shark will slowly open its mouth and wait for fish to enter (Michael W. S., 1993). Following is another behavior where the shark will form a line behind another and mimic the movements of that individual (Michael W. S., 1993).
