Hey, first-time homeowners, if you want your fridge filter to keep filtering your fridge, you need to change it every six months. Oh, also, your fridge … has a filter.
Don’t look so guilty, your parents probably didn’t do this either. But your fridge filter catches minerals, food particles and other crud you don’t want going into your ice cubes or water dispenser or, gulp, mouth. As the filter builds up debris over time, it’ll work less efficiently. Eventually, your ice maker could clog up and stop working altogether.
To prevent nasty water and ice cube issues, get the following steps down cold:
1. Turn the ice maker off and unplug the refrigerator to prevent water spillage and for safety’s sake.
2. Find the filter. The location and orientation of the filter will vary depending on the model of your refrigerator.
3. Remove the filter according to manufacturer instructions for your fridge and filter, which likely will involve simply unplugging the filter, or turning it counterclockwise to unhook it.
4. Remove any protective seals from your new filter.
5. Install the new filter, again, according to manufacturer instructions for your fridge and filter.
6. Take this opportunity to wipe down your ice bin and the area around the filter using a vinegar-and-water solution and a microfiber cloth, drying with another cloth as you go.
7. Plug the fridge back in, turn the ice maker back on and reset your water filter alert if your fridge has one.
8. Dump the first batch of ice and first few glasses of water to clear out that new-filter flavor.
And there ya have it, your fridge filter — and your conscience — are clean.
