My third great grandfather, George W. Boswell, was a logger in central Louisiana from the late 1800s to the early 1900s. Before that, he had fought in the Civil War and managed to live to tell the tale. I had heard stories about him growing up, though few and far between. One in particular has always fascinated me.

It told of him looking for buried confederate treasure with a companion of his. They went out on a somewhat gloomy day, in search of a large live oak tree. They were told by a friend of George's that the confederates buried a load of treasure upon retreat, to keep it from the union, and that this was the very spot accused of nesting their soon-to-be fortune.

They trudged through acres of thick grass until the tree was upon them. It was captivating so that it struck them still, frozen in place, in awe of its mighty stature. But as they stood, shovels and rifles in tote, the branches began to sway more and more violently, as the winds shifted and a storm blew in directly over them. Just as they decided they better get to work, a man on horseback exploded from the shaded backside of that ancient oak, wielding and wildly slashing the air with a Calvary sword. The horse reared up on its hind legs as a voice bellowed from seemingly everywhere, "GET AWAY FROM HERE!!" Tough as iron as he was, forged in war, George and his companion leaked all of the color from their faces into their hearts, and dropped it in their feet. The soldier couldn't have made that ghastly wail. Because his head had been severed. They retreated, vowing never to look for it again, and the story has been passed down for years.

My version probably differs from what I heard as a kid, but nevertheless, I hope you enjoy the song and the story ✌️
