James Howells has around £600 million in Bitcoin buried in a landfill in Wales — and after 12 years of fighting, he's never getting it back. Here's the full story.

In 2009, James Howells mined 8,000 Bitcoin when they were worth basically nothing. He stored the private key on a hard drive.

In 2013, his partner accidentally threw out the hard drive during a cleanup. It ended up in the Docksway landfill in Newport, Wales.

Then Bitcoin exploded. From pennies to tens of thousands of pounds per coin.

Those 8,000 Bitcoin became worth over £600 million.

James spent 12 years trying to get that landfill excavated. He raised millions in funding. He assembled a team of data recovery experts. He sued Newport City Council. He even offered them tens of millions of pounds worth of Bitcoin.

They said no. Every single time.

In January 2025, a court threw out his case.

He finally gave up this year.

The council is now planning to convert the landfill site into a solar farm.

That hard drive — with £600 million in Bitcoin — is staying buried forever.
