The Bank of England's Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) is meeting this week, and investors have been speculating whether or not the committee will raise interest rates. However, in recent days, pricing in financial markets has suggested that the chances of a policy move are now no better than even, despite earlier speculation that it was a done deal.

This uncertainty has been compounded by successive scares in the financial sector, including the collapse of Silicon Valley Bank and the frantic negotiations to rescue Credit Suisse. This has led to calls for the MPC to hold off on making any decisions until the situation becomes clearer.

Furthermore, the case for a further rise in the UK's benchmark interest rate, which has already climbed from 0.1% to 4% in just 14 months, is less clear-cut than it was before. When the MPC met in early February, it abandoned its previous guidance that further rate increases were needed, saying instead that it would act only on evidence of "persistent inflationary pressures."

The UK's inflation rate fell to 10.1% in January, in line with the BoE's forecasts. However, a sharp drop in service sector inflation could be more significant as it reflects underlying pressures. BoE governor Andrew Bailey has also warned investors not to assume that UK interest rates will rise further, as the UK's inflation dynamics do not necessarily match those of the US and EU.

In summary, while there was earlier speculation that the Bank of England would raise interest rates, recent financial scares and the uncertain inflation outlook may lead the MPC to hold off on making any decisions for the time being.
