Описание к видео BANGLADESH: DHAKA: GENERAL STRIKE CAUSES CLASHES WITH POLICE

(19 Jan 1996) Natural Sound

Police in Dhaka, capital of Bangladesh, clashed with thousands of anti-government demonstrators on Thursday, injuring at least 50 people.

Bangladesh has been crippled by a general strike and mass demonstrations for the last two days, over opposition parties demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Khaleda Zia before next months general elections.

The streets of Dhaka were in chaos on Thursday, the second day of a general strike and mass demonstration against the government.

Demonstrations were held to demand the resignation of Prime Minister Khaleda Zia so that the general elections, due to be held on February 15, are held under a neutral caretaker government.

Opposition parties are threatening to boycott the polls because Mrs Zia has refused to resign.

They say they can't trust Mrs Zia to hold free elections.

The Awami League, the largest opposition party, and its allies took to the streets of Dhaka on the day nominations were due to be scrutinised and marched towards the election commission office.

All roads leading to the election commission office were blocked by police.

Riot police baton-charged the demonstrators and splashed coloured water and lobbed teargas canisters to disperse them..

The protesters threw rocks and exploded a few crude bombs in response to the tear gas.

Demonstrators then scattered in the streets where they smashed at least 50 cars, auto rickshaws and buses.

At least five of the rickshaws burned and about 50 people were injured.
