Imagine the stark learning curve for the U.S. Navy in an era when carrier operations were rapidly evolving. These remarkable archival high-speed, slow-motion landing scenes aboard USS Wasp capture terror and triumph. The majority of the aircraft are Grumman F4F Wildcat fighters and Vought SB2U Vindicator scout bombers. Some markings are 1942 vintage with camouflage and no red center to the national star insignia; others are of earlier origin. USS Wasp was in service from the summer of 1940 until September 15, 1942, when Japanese torpedoes found their mark during the Guadalcanal campaign. This historical footage, now more than 80 years old, gives reason to honor courageous pioneers of carrier aviation, and to appreciate how far that mission has developed safely.
