2007 - 2014 GM Vortec 5.3L V8 Engine AFM Fouling ~ Spark Plug Inspection & Replacement (Chevy & GMC)

In this video we will go over spark plug maintenance considerations for the GM 5.3L Vortec V8 engine regular production option (RPO) LC9. These engines have a fuel economy feature known as AFM, or Active Fuel Management. GM published service bulletins outline how AFM can contribute to excessive oil consumption with this engine, particularly with LH (drivers side) cylinder #1 and #7 (AFM only controls cylinders 1 and 7 on the LH side, and 4 and 6 on the RH side for the 5.3L V8). This oil consumption causes spark plug fouling which can result in premature spark plug failure, and cylinder misfires. We'll go over the process of checking and replacing the spark plugs on these engines, and an alternative maintenance mileage schedule that reflects the fouling risks AFM brings to spark plug lifespan.

The truck illustrated is a 2013 Chevrolet Avalanche LT with engine RPO LC9, but the repair procedure will be the same for any GMT900 style 2007 thru 2014 SUV or truck of the GMT900 series with this generation IV GM 5.3L Vortec V8 small block engine. Both Chevrolet and GMC, as well as Cadillac trucks and SUVs may have this engine option. Models like Avalanche, Suburban, Silverado, Tahoe, Yukon, and Yukon XL.
