"About 1:30 in the morning on Friday, one of our DDOT employees by the name of Devin Russell saw the first signs of a fire in the Shoemaker (bus) terminal, went to his supervisor, Kenneth Glenn, immediately, who called 911. They came out, and within our terminal, there were probably 80, 85 buses at risk. That's a third of our fleet. We could have lost a third of the buses in the city of Detroit. They called 911, and starting with Dale Bates and James Reeves and eventually joined by mechanics, by office workers and the like, they drove 75 buses out of the terminal before the fire could spread."

"We have to remain calm under stressful situations, so me, Ken, James Reeves went down, even though the bay was smoky, we moved all the buses out as quickly as possible."
STORYLINE:
Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan visited a city bus terminal that was damaged by a fire to thank transit employees and firefighters who worked to save dozens of buses from the flames.
During a news event Thursday afternoon at the Shoemaker terminal, Duggan and representatives of the Detroit Department of Transportation as well as the city's fire department watched surveillance footage of the buses being driven out of the fiery terminal to safety.
The mayor said "we could have lost a third of the buses in the city of Detroit," but that didn't happen thanks to DDOT worker Dale Bates and others who "drove 75 buses out of the terminal before the fire could spread."
The fire, which investigators say started in the engine of a vehicle, knocked out seven older buses, all of which already had been scheduled for replacement this spring.
Bates, the afternoon shift foreman, spoke at Thursday's event, saying he and his colleagues "have to remain calm under stressful situations."
