Iris Brey – The Lesbian Gaze 08.10.2021 - CINEMATEK

We thank Iris Brey (author of ‘Le regard féminin, une révolution à l'écran & ‘Sex and the Series’, journalist and film critic) for her bold, militant and emotional lecture, “The Lesbian Gaze” at CINEMATEK on 08.10.2021.
What started as a joke, became a frank exercise revisiting her work, her own bias and views, hoping to reframe cinema to celebrate filmmakers, the female body and people who want to break away from the ‘heteropatriarchal regime’.
Due to Youtube’s strict policies about nudity and in respect with copyrights regulations this video does not include the presented film fragments as shown during the lecture.
Iris Brey focuses in the lecture in English on filmmakers Alice Guy, Germaine Dulac, Chantal Akerman, Agnès Varda, and Barbara Hammer, celebrating, showing and exchanging about the complexity of gender and female representation.
There is a short introduction in French (0’00’’ – 0’57’’) and two audience questions at the end, also in French.
To complete the answers to the last questions, 95% of the films mentioned during the lecture have been screened once or more in recent times at CINEMATEK. We have a monthly night "Our story" which shares the same sensibilities.
