Описание к видео Rome Virtual Tour. San Lorenzo area (Tiburtino district) [CC in English]. ITALY - Slow TV [4K HDR].

Hello Dear Friends, welcome to MOPEG 👋.
In this Virtual Tour we will walk the streets of the San Lorenzo area in the Tiburtino district.
This area takes its name from the Basilica of San Lorenzo fuori le mura and is located between the Verano cemetery and the Aurelian Walls (at Porta Tiburtina).
The urbanization of this area dates back to the end of 1800 after the annexation of Rome to the Kingdom of Italy and its designation as capital.
This area was built as a working-class neighborhood. In the years between 1884 and 1888 were built popular housing units (the famous "Case di Ringhiera", buildings with a common balcony) to accommodate the railway workers who worked in the nearby freight yard.
In 1922, San Lorenzo was the only neighborhood where an attempt was made to stop the march on Rome organized by the National Fascist Party. The neighborhood was the scene of clashes and fights between fascists and Arditi del Popolo, who, aided by the population, were able to block the entrance of the squadrists, so that San Lorenzo was given the reputation of "red neighborhood" (understood as anti-fascist).
In the thirties to the north of the district was built the University Campus, with the new headquarters of the University La Sapienza and the building of the National Research Council.
During the Second World War, San Lorenzo and the surrounding neighborhoods (Prenestino, Casilino, Labicano and Tuscolano) were hit by the first bombing of Rome by the Allies, which had as its objective the attack on the freight terminal. The bombing caused about 3,000 deaths and 11,000 wounded.
In the late '60s during the student protests San Lorenzo became the headquarters of several extra-parliamentary groups, both for the availability of empty rooms with low rents and for the proximity to the university.
Since the 1980s, the neighborhood began to lose the "popular" aspect it had at the beginning.
The gradual gentrification led to the "replacement" of the original inhabitants with university students from the nearby Sapienza University and artists, craftsmen, writers, actors, directors and intellectuals.
Today San Lorenzo is the main university district of Rome, attended by young people from all over the city and animated by numerous pubs, restaurants, breweries, clubs and cultural associations.
