It is 1923 and all of society is talking about the infamous Russell v Russel case.
John Hugo Russell, young, impetuous heir to Lord Ampthill, and with a predilection for dressing up in women’s clothing, has married the vibrant bohemian successful dress shop owner whose main insistence to her agreement of marriage is that she does not wish to become pregnant.
Following this requirement to the letter, the marriage is not consummated and there is non intimacy. Mrs Russell continues her carefree lifestyle involving going out about town with several different men. And then, she becomes pregnant. And she insists the child is her husband’s the veracity of chich is important to establish regarding succession.
The Hon John Russell disagrees that it is his child. She insists it is and talks of his sleepwalking ways and having a bath after him in terms of ways that she could become pregnant by him without his knowledge.
The case was a complete sensation and went two rounds – the second one with famous solicitor Sir Marshal Hall.
