Maltese is spoken by some of the natives of Malta, a small island country south of Sicily. It started out as a Siculo-Arabic dialect, which due to historical events, notably one where Italian was made the official language by the Knights Hospitallier of St John, significantly diverged and differentiated itself by absorbing a huge amount of Romance vocabulary in its own unique way. It was made an official langauge in 1934. Since Malta was also a British colony, English is also an official language in Malta, and because of an uncontrolled/deliberately brought amount of foreign migrants which make up 25% of Malta's population as of 2024, Maltese is sadly losing prevalence.
