Hello there, friends. The film industry has many hidden stories of actors who were also a part of India's freedom struggle. While some, like A. K. Hangal, Nazir Hussain, and Tiwari, found both fame and fortune, others lived their lives in obscurity. Today, we're talking about one such forgotten artist, Juthika Devi, who was considered a sister by the great freedom fighter, Shaheed Bhagat Singh.
Born on March 5, 1910, in Jalandhar, Juthika Devi was married at the young age of 15. Her husband inspired her with a sense of patriotism, and together, they contributed to the nation's struggle for independence. Juthika Devi actively participated in Mahatma Gandhi's Quit India Movement, just like other artists and freedom fighters such as C.S. Dubey. Meanwhile, the renowned actor Nazir Hussain was a close associate of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose and was even imprisoned in Malaysia during World War II.
Despite her sacrifices, Juthika Devi never received a freedom fighter's pension or a certificate of honor from the government. She and her husband moved to Mumbai, where she took up work as a film extra to make a living. Given her strong, heavy voice, she was cast in roles without any dialogue. Her first film was Jogan, which was released in 1950.
You might be surprised to know that Juthika Devi worked in over 200 films, but her name is only associated with one on the internet: Mere Lal (1966). You can also see her in films like Shikast (1953), Maa Ka Aanchal, Naya Raasta, and Reshma Aur Shera.
Both of her daughters, Anju and Chhaya, also followed in her footsteps as junior artists. Anju was born in 1937, and Chhaya was born in 1947. You can spot Anju in Anil Kapoor's hit film Kasam, while Chhaya can be seen in Ajay Devgn's blockbuster Diljale.
Juthika Devi is one of many artists whose contributions have been forgotten. She passed away on November 25, 2000, and her daughter Anju also passed away some years later. Unfortunately, there is no information available about the whereabouts of her younger daughter, Chhaya.
