"This is a major step in like the development of our voices in Hollywood and this is major step for the culture to be leading in nominations for my body of work: you know, 'Malcolm X', 'Amistad,' 'Black Panther,' 'Wakanda Forever' and now 'Sinners,' like my trajectory has been about telling the story of culture and I'm really proud because history is being erased our history is being erased as we speak. And so, to have this responsibility of telling our stories and being as authentic as I can and being awarded for it is a celebration and I'm really honored, you know, to be to be sitting here. And, you know, I thank the Lord that, you know, Ryan Coogler was born because because he continues to tell stories that are important to the culture."
STORYLINE:
Ruth E. Carter has made history as the most Oscar-nominated Black woman across any category in the awards ceremony.

She was nominated for best costume design for her work on "Sinners." The vampire film, directed by Ryan Coogler, leads with 16 nominations.

"Our history is being erased as we speak and so to have this responsibility of telling our stories and being as authentic as I can and being awarded for it is a celebration and I'm really honored," said Carter.

Carter has already won twice in the category for "Black Panther" and "Wakanda Forever," also directed by Coogler. She is the only Black woman to win an Oscar more than once in any category.

“I thank the Lord that Ryan Coogler was born,” she said with a laugh. “Because he continues to tell stories that are important to the culture.”

The 98th Academy Awards will take place on March 15 at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles and will be televised live on ABC and Hulu.
