Set in the 50s but shot like a 70s character study with 80s needle drops, the film uses table tennis as an allegory for post-war American capitalism and toxic bravado. Gwyneth Paltrow shines as a fading movie star, the supporting cast is full of inspired choices, and cinematographer Darius Khondji makes every frame sweat.
