Despite the history of the Meiji Period being spun as the only peaceful transition of power in Japanese history, I'm here to tell you that we have been deceived. The Meiji Period did not come about quietly. It came about after a little known war called the Boshin War. The first battles of that war happen just outside of the capital in Kyoto: Toba and Fushimi.

You have searched for it, and now it is here. In this video, we'll discuss what was the Battle of Toba-Fushimi and discover where it took place.

Illustrations of the battle were taken from the public domain, but are a part of the chronicle of the events of Toba-Fushimi housed at Ninnaji Temple in Kyoto. The chronicle shows more about the battle than I could share.
