January 6th (or Epiphany) marks the end of the Twelve Days of Christmas. It is said to be the day the wise men visited Jesus, and throughout the 1800s, the night before (also known as Twelfth Night) was generally the last grand celebration of the season.

During the Regency era, Twelfth Night was actually more popular and celebrated than Christmas itself, and it was considered a night for silliness and pretend. Often, people threw parties in which everyone was assigned a character for the evening—most of which were snobby, rude, or flirtatious. The guests were supposed to embody the part for the evening, giving them an opportunity to behave out of character with impunity. Often, there was a woman and man who were the king and queen of the evening, who made decrees that often ended with the other guests being teased or embarrassed.

Also, Christmas Eve and Twelfth Night often featured the putting up or taking down of the Christmas decorations as it was considered bad luck to have them up before December 24th and after January 5th.
