Napoleon Bonaparte passed away on May 5, 1821, while in exile. He took his last breath on the island of Saint Helena in the southern Atlantic Ocean, far from his beloved homeland of France. During his four years in exile, his health deteriorated significantly. There were concerns about his stomach, and based on his symptoms, he was suspected to have suffered from either gastric illness or even cancer. Although he had requested that his remains be returned to France, the British authorities who had exiled him did not comply with Napoleon's wishes. The British government decided that Napoleon Bonaparte should be buried on the island of Saint Helena, in the Valley of the Willows. It wasn't until 1840, 19 years after his death, that King Louis Philippe I of France obtained permission from the British to repatriate Napoleon's body to France.
