After graduating from college, Paul Schultze enlisted in the Army to avoid the draft and completed flight training to become a helicopter pilot. After a tour in Germany, Schultze volunteered to go to Vietnam to keep his brother from deploying. He arrived in Southeast Asia in 1970 and joined the 77th Aerial Rocket Artillery and flew missions in support of the 101st Airborne and Special Forces units based out of northern I Corp. Schultze participated in the defense of Firebase Ripcord and Lam Son 719, the invasion of Laos. On February 10, 1971, his Cobra was shot down while supporting South Vietnamese forces. Schultze successfully landed the damage aircraft, avoided enemy troops and was rescued by an American helicopter operating in the vicinity.
