Sandhill crane courtship displays, mating dance, and calls at Circle B Bar Reserve in Lakeland, Florida. Sandhill cranes have one of the most captivating courtship rituals from throwing sticks and dirt to bowing, twirling, and flapping their wings while facing each other and almost touching beaks. It's truly breathtaking! I always love seeing these familiar reserve residents and on this particular day I was fortunate when they displayed their spectacular rituals. I also watched as the male protectively stood guard while his mate took a bath and preened for 45 minutes - never once did the male take a dip himself even though it was a very hot day. He stood guard making sure his mate was always safe. As the day ended and the sandhill crane mates walked away, it seemed they were encouraging me to come along too - what an experience!
