Midnight, February 13, 1950. Over the Canadian mountains, a B-36 Peacemaker shudders violently as orange flames engulf a third engine. Even with the fire, ice accumulates across its massive wings. Three of its six engines are disabled. The training exercise is now a full blown crisis.

Inside, Captain Harold Barry's knuckles whiten as he wrestles with the controls. The bomber plummets toward the coastline, dropping hundreds of feet per minute.

In the bomb bay: a Mark IV atomic weapon, technology barely five years old. The same destructive design that devastated Hiroshima.

There’s no way to save the failing Peacemaker. But they can’t let it crash with the bomb still aboard. They have briefed and trained for this a hundred times. But the United States has never lost a nuclear device before.
