UGANDA & DRC STRENGTHEN COOPERATION FOR PEACE DEVELOPMENT

Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) engaged in peace creation and building through a high-level diplomatic recommendation review, focusing on cross-border security, citizen engagement against armed groups, trade promotion, and joint conflict resolution mechanisms, despite historical tensions and resource exploitation issues.

During a stakeholder meeting at Hotel Kasindi over the weekend, led by grassroots activities of La Benevolencija Great Lakes in DRC and Peace Bridge of Reconciliation in Uganda under Media Dialogue, explained reasons to both countries ties in economic, peace intergration.

Lt. Maate Magwara, Deputy RDC for Kasese District, emphasized that both countries share a common natural heritage and need to pursue the same goals for economic and security development.

He noted that both countries are fighting violent groups and addressing irregularities in lake fishing.

Barthelemy Sibabuyirwa Kambale, Delegate Governor to Kasindi, stressed the need for peace-building and cooperation between the two countries, aiming at regional development.

He recommended Uganda to have been addressing harmful fishing practices on Lake Edward.

He also emphasized that cooperation, unity, and respect for fishing regulations are more important than proposed boundary issues.

Mr. Eriphazi Muhindi Bukombi, Kasese District LCV Chairperson, called for peace-building to strengthen business activities along the border markets.

Muhindi and other participants emphasized mutual respect and encouraged participants to be ambassadors of peace in the region.

This meeting followed earlier discussions involving students, business members, fishermen, security personnel, civil leaders, and organizations, aimed at promoting peace and security in the region.
