The entry of Islam into the Netherlands began with Muslim migration in the mid-20th century. Initially, a small Muslim community came from Indonesia, a former Dutch colony that had just become independent at that time. This included Maluku soldiers from the Dutch East Indies, numbering around a thousand people, a small number of whom were Muslim. They were initially placed in temporary accommodation, but later settled permanently.

In addition, Muslim migration to the Netherlands also came from Suriname, another Dutch colony. In the 1960s, Surinamese workers migrated to the Netherlands, reaching 5,500 in 1970 and peaking at 36,000 in 1975, following Suriname's independence. Migration from Turkey and Morocco also contributed to the growth of the Muslim community in the Netherlands, starting with a bilateral labor agreement in 1964.
