Bueng Kan – Naga Caves, a growing tourist destination with fascinating history and folklore.

It was my wife’s coworkers who had been and recommended that we go and explore Bueng Kan and the Naga or Naka Caves. We invited my wife’s cousin and wife and headed up north for our first time to this wonderful place. My wife’s coworker had met someone on Facebook who stated to be a tour guide and set it up with us. We were rather skeptical at first as never had met someone over Facebook to meet for a tour but everything did pan out.

We left between breakfast and lunch and did not arrive to Bueng Kan til after dark. We noticed a lot of construction on the roads of from Khon Kaen going to Udon Thani that slowed us down. We ate dinner and had some drinks at a local restaurant in town not far from our accommodations in Bueng Kan. We went to bed shortly after and woke up extra early to grab some breakfast at a 7/11 along the way. As we neared Naga or Naka Caves, it was very green and very country in this area which is how we like it. The local people were very friendly and helpful. After parking and saying a prayer and making an offering, we made our way to the entrance of the tour. There we met our tour guide.

We made our ascent and it was quite a hike, at times taking steep steps up and zig zagging up the mountain. We saw some rocks that really looked similar to the scales of a snake or reptile, it was really unbelievable as I never seen anything like it in other parts of the world. We made it to an area where we waited for our number to be called as there was really a long line to the caves. We took advantage of this time to eat lunch and take a restful break and even close our eyes underneath the shade.

Once our number was called we made our way to see the caves and the rocks even looked more and more like a snake or reptile. We took our time shooting video and pictures and appreciate our tour guide giving us tips where to take pictures and him taking our photos a long the way too. There were parts where we prayed and knelt in silence. From there, we traversed to another area where there was a Temple along the cliff. We took more photos and admired the beauty of the area.

After all was said and done, we headed back down, and it was more of a challenge as there were lines at points to get down that slowed us down. Our tour guide recommended us a boat tour to one of the Mekong River Islands as there was an event there at this time. We would sticky and sweaty after a long day on the mountain but appreciated the cool and contrasting landscapes of the river. It vaguely reminded us of the boat tour to Koh Phi Phi a couple weeks earlier but to a calmer river compared to the rough waters of the ocean.

The Mekong River island was truly beautiful, wish I took video but my camera battery was running low if not had almost died already from the long day. We made it back to dock and the people at the river dock were so friendly and nice and were curious of the drone as I was finally able to take some videos from above briefly as we were rushing to get to a hotel on the way back. My wife and cousin-in-law and wife were so happy after all we accomplished from this trip. We definitely recommend it to others who want to see a part of Thailand off the beaten path.
