Despite their dominant position as model organisms, mice are far from the ideal subjects in which to study successful aging; a large majority of vertebrates already show superior longevity (controlled for body size). Steve Austad highlighted an array of examples to justify giving greater attention to species – particularly birds – with better innate control of aging, and doubly so in translational work where the genetic homogeneity and environmental idiosyncrasies of lab-reared rodents can lead to dangerously inaccurate predictions of real-world viability.
