My cheap-o SRAM chain has failed me too many times. Sent my wife on a mission today and she came back with a nice Shimano chain purchased from the local bike shop. This chain comes with no type of fancy master link. It has a long pin you install, press in with your chain tool, then break off the excess sticking out the back with a pair of pliers (which breaks easy, don't worry). I don't normally use anything to assist me, such as a bent piece of coat hanger, but feel free too as it may make it easier for you.
