Parallel capacitors are mostly safe. Voltages just have to stay below what the lowest rated value capacitor can handle, and their voltages should be the same before you connect them together.

I demonstrate how you get violent sparks at just 25 volts with only 470 micro farad (470µF) capacitors being connected on parallel while one of them is completely discharged.

Larger capacitance and/or higher voltages are much more dramatic, and can cause serious damage.
