Last week, the Endangered Wolf Center team said goodbye to a beloved resident. Nina, a 15-year-old maned wolf, was humanely euthanized with her Animal Care staff beside her. We miss her roar bark already.

As one of the oldest maned wolves in the population, Nina was considered geriatric when she had a severe neurological episode, causing her to fall and injure her leg. We consulted with veterinarians and, due to the extensive surgery and rehabilitation it would have required, made the difficult decision that euthanasia was the most humane option.

Nina arrived at the Endangered Wolf Center in 2010 and had two pups with her mate, Nopal. Nina was a wonderful mother, and it was such a special opportunity for us to watch her raise her pups. Chrys, her son, recently became a father to Nina's granddaughter, Amora, at Sedgwick County Zoo. And her daughter, Francisca, is now living at the Alexandria Zoo.

With less than 300 maned wolves found in human care, her educational impact for our guests was vast, helping them understand maned wolves’ importance within the South American ecosystem. Nina's legacy as an amazing mother and mate will be remembered by our staff, members, volunteers, and visitors. Her memory will live on in her children, who are helping increase the maned wolf population and educating people across the nation about maned wolf conservation.
