The population continued to grow at a rapid pace, reaching 4 billion in 1974, 5 billion in 1987, and 6 billion in 1999.

As of 2021, the world population is estimated to be around 7.9 billion.
The United Nations projects that the world population will reach 8.5 billion in 2030, 9.7 billion in 2050, and 11.2 billion in 2100.
