Masons — How to Play 🎲 and Why It's a Gem 💎

In Masons (Leo Colovini, Hans im Glück, 2006), players take turns adding walls, towers, houses and palaces to the board, with only a bit of control as to what and where. Players have a hand of cards with a variety of ways of scoring points; when an area is surrounded by walls, everyone has a chance to score cards from their hand. Which cards to play are important, but also how many — play two and your hand size will shrink, play zero and your hand size will grow. Play it once or twice and you might assume the board play is the important part, and curse the lack of control. Play it more and you might realise it's a card management game more than anything — and a very good one.

Masons wasn't a huge hit when it came out, and never got a reprint. But, for my money, it's one of the best in the "we all have secret goals and are messing around on a shared board" genre of games.
