Fire Detection System Overview
A fire detection system is a crucial building safety system designed to detect the presence of fire, smoke, or carbon monoxide and alert occupants and emergency personnel. Its primary goal is to protect life and property by enabling early evacuation and rapid response.


Key Components and How They Work:

Initiating Devices (Sensors): These are the devices that detect environmental changes indicating a fire.

Smoke Detectors: The most common type, they detect smoke particles in the air. Photoelectric detectors are better for smoldering fires, while ionization detectors are faster at sensing flaming fires.

Heat Detectors: These activate when the temperature reaches a preset point (fixed-temperature) or rises rapidly (rate-of-rise). They are often used in areas like kitchens where smoke detectors might cause false alarms.


Flame Detectors: These sensors detect the infrared or ultraviolet radiation emitted by open flames.

Manual Pull Stations: These allow a person to manually trigger the alarm system upon discovering a fire.

Fire Alarm Control Panel (FACP): This is the "brain" of the system. It receives signals from the initiating devices, processes them to determine if a fire condition exists, and then activates the notification appliances. It also monitors the system for faults or trouble conditions.



Notification Appliances: These devices alert building occupants of an emergency. They include:

Audible Devices: Horns, bells, sirens, or speakers that deliver alarm tones or voice evacuation instructions.

Visual Devices: Flashing strobe lights to warn the hearing impaired or for use in high-noise environments.

Power Supply: The system has a primary power source (usually the building's electricity) and a secondary backup power source (like batteries) to ensure operation during a power outage.

When a detector senses smoke or heat, or a manual station is pulled, it sends a signal to the control panel. The panel then activates the alarm, sounding horns and flashing lights throughout the building to initiate evacuation.
