Kemeraltı Bazaar History

Kemeraltı is one of the oldest bazaars in the world. Izmir's 2,400-year-old Kemeraltı Bazaar, which embraces many historical sites, has been the shopping center of the city since the Hellenistic period. It is an important place that directs the social, cultural and commercial life of Izmir and accelerates the development of the city. Despite the times, it offers its guests a fun shopping experience in the area that extends from the Clock Tower to the Agora, with its herbalists, coppersmiths and shoemakers. There are approximately 2 thousand registered historical buildings in the bazaar. It is also a region where all three religions have lived in harmony for many years with its churches, mosques and synagogues. Izmir's Historical City Center, which includes Kemeraltı Bazaar and its surroundings, was included in the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List in April 2020.
